Reader survey: Do you balance your checkbook?

When I opened my first real bank account before my freshman year of college, I was more than bewildered by the process. I had a simple checking account with my local bank before, but this new world of ATM cards, carbon checks and the first online banking programs was brand new to me. I was definitely overwhelmed. I tried to keep my accounts balanced using the check register included with my new checks, but it only lasted a few weeks. I haven't balanced my checkbook since.

With online banking and a free Yodlee account, I can check my accounts every day to see where I stand. Plus, I like to use credit cards for most of my big purchases, which cuts back on unexpected balance changes in my checking account. This system seems to work quite well for me.

What about you? Do you use your check register? Do you balance your accounts by hand? Do you use Quicken to track your money? Or do you simply ignore the whole process? Share your bank account management techniques in the comments section below.

I use a great program called Moneydance (http://www.moneydance.com). It's half the price of Quicken and does all I need for managing my accounts.

I haven't heard of that program. I'll check it out!
