Funny Money Friday: Celebrity Credit Card Sightings
Money doesn't have to be boring! Each week, CreditBloggers.com takes a look at the lighter side of the personal finance world in a series called Funny Money Friday.
There doesn't seem to be any shortage of weird, bizarre and ugly credit cards these days! Credit card issuers know that consumers love credit cards that reflect their own unique style and tastes. And there's no accounting for other people's tastes! But what about consumer idols? The celebrities and athletes that we all follow? Don't worry, there are some celebrity credit cards out there for you:
Johnny Cash Prepaid MasterCard - Honor the legend of Johnny Cash with a prepaid credit card. You could walk the line, oh wait, there is no credit line with this account. And it comes with a monthly fee of $6.95, $1.50 for each ATM withdrawal, $0.75 for each point of sale transaction and $3.00 to call customer service. Lovely!
Elvis Visa Credit Card - This is a lot better! With each purchase you earn donations to the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation. Plus, a free Elvis poster, rewards points, discounts at Graceland and a low 9.9% APR. Now this is a card good enough for any Hound Dog!
Russell Simmons' Prepaid RushCard - Supposedly, this card was designed by hip hop mogul, Russell Simmons, to promote financial empowerment. But in reality, it's really just another prepaid credit card offer that charges a lot of fees and doesn't build your credit history. At least this card's fee schedule is a lot less expensive than the Johnny Cash card.
Bono's American Express Red Card - This is the best one so far. Bono teamed up with American Express to develop a credit card to help fight AIDS in Africa. Currently only available in the UK, this card donates 1% of your spending to The Global Fund. No annual fee, a decent APR and a cool card design make this card a pretty good idea for charity minded borrowers. Elton John and MBNA have a similar card here in the US.
Tiger Woods American Express Card - Earn 500 bonus points when Tiger wins a major tournament! Plus, discounts on golf and a free green fee pass. But with an 18.5% APR and a $99 annual fee this card may land you in the rough.
Oh, and we can't forget the Trump Card. I didn't include it here because it has also made our lists of the most bizarre and the most ugly credit cards in the past. Poor Trump!
Overall, I was surprised at how few celebrity credit cards are out there. Where's the Paris Hilton Visa? The Marilyn Monroe MasterCard? The Shaq Card? The Rush Limbaugh charge card? It's a whole marketing channel that remains untapped!
